Tomas Tranströmer växte upp tillsammans med sin mamma på Folkungagatan på Södermalm i Stockholm. Fadern lämnade tidigt familjen, men han och Tomas höll viss kontakt under åren. Tomas hade sin skoltid först på Katarina Norra skola och sedan på Södra Latins gymnasium. Somrarna tillbringades på Runmarö i Stockholms skärgård.
